BALATON
Balaton (working title) is a historical romantic dramedy about Hungary in the 1980’s, the summers at Lake Balaton and the world of Stasi operatives keeping an eye on East German tourists spending their holidays at the lake.
During another hot summer at Lake Balaton in 1986, an East-German and a West-German cousin fall in love with a 16-year-old Hungarian girl Mari whose dad runs the campsite they stay at. The two boys, Gregor from the East and Stefan from the West spend every summer in Hungary but this year’s holiday is different: Gregor and his family want to cross the Iron Curtain with the help of their West German relatives. The secret preparations are underway but the boys still enjoy themselves: they compete for Mari, party with her at the disco, take her to open-air cinemas or go for swims in the lake together. However, things get complicated when it turns out that Mari’s father works for the so-called Balaton Brigade, a Stasi outpost whose operatives and their extensive network of informants keep a close watch on the citizens of the GDR who may want meet up with West Germans and/or flee to the West. In the light of this revelation Mari has to make the toughest decision of her life...
