NHIEM
The story of Việt cộng war cameraman Nhiem.
This intense story follows the life of a young Vietnamese man in the 1970’s, starting out as an 19 year old camera assistant and eventually becoming the Viet Cong’s documentary eye.
“Nhiem”, which is based on a true story, provides the foundation to build a fictional character “on real events”, thereby allowing for the narrative freedom to add a new perspective on the Vietnam war genre and to tell the story from a Vietnamese point of view.
--------------------
Vietnam 1967. Nhiem is a 19-year-old film student, when he is forced to leave his studies and join the Vietnam War. During the Tet Offensive, at the Ho-Chi-Minh trail and many other locations, he experiences the full extent and the sufferings of war. During a mission he meets cameraman Khai. Over the next months, their paths cross several times, and when Nhiem is detailed to join the “jungle studios”, he meets Khai again and becomes his supervisor. With courage and an eye for the right images, Nhiem eventually becomes a front cameraman of the Việt cộng. Documenting countless moments of a long lasting war, he begins to question what the true images are, in this war of a divided nation. (For Nhiem the war ended in 1975, on the day the North Vietnamese troops took over the Presidential Palace in Saigon.)
